So most of the time I'm clear about my motivations. As a young kid who had to fight her schoolyard bullies, I learned the art of subtlety. You have to hide where you're coming from so they won't expect a strike...but you always have to know what moves you so you're always right with yourself. Kind of a scary thing for a kid to know, huh?
But I knew my strengths, and I played on them. Pretty soon, the bullies were leaving me alone. Besides, it helped that I had cousins and siblings who taught me how to give as good - or better - as I got, heh.
These days though, when you're bombarded from all sides by bullies like problems, trials and concerns, you forget your strengths and it'll feel like you're slogging along unsuccessfully. Me, I now only have a vague idea of what I can and can't leverage in any battle. Good thing I found this survey on character strengths from the University of Pennsylvania's Authentic Happiness website that really helped put things - at least, my strengths - in perspective. (If you want to take the test, you'll need to register for an account. It's free.)
In between Strengths 1-5 and 20-24 are 14 other character traits that I can play on for the challenges of these days. Looking at these results though, I don't know what to think. My Top Strengths
Strength #1: Judgment, critical thinking, and open-mindedness
Thinking things through and examining them from all sides are important aspects of who you are. You do not jump to conclusions, and you rely only on solid evidence to make your decisions. You are able to change your mind.
Strength #2: Perspective (wisdom)
Although you may not think of yourself as wise, your friends hold this view of you. They value your perspective on matters and turn to you for advice. You have a way of looking at the world that makes sense to others and to yourself.

The Least of my Strengths

Strength #21: Industry, diligence, and perseverance

Strength #22: Self-control and self-regulation
You self-consciously regulate what you feel and what you do. You are a disciplined person. You are in control of your appetites and your emotions, not vice versa.
Strength#23: Kindness and generosity
You are kind and generous to others, and you are never too busy to do a favor. You enjoy doing good deeds for others, even if you do not know them well.
Strength #24: Humor and playfulness
You like to laugh and tease. Bringing smiles to other people is important to you. You try to see the light side of all situations.
On the one hand, my top strengths outline a highly cerebral creative - the left & right brain hemispheres well used. On the other hand, the least of my strengths paint a self-indulgent and temperamental woman who tends towards misanthropy. Oh well, now I know which character traits to build on and which to work on.
